Chi Mei Corporation (CMC), a supplier of plastic and rubber materials, has issued NT$5 billion worth of green bonds to finance its green investment projects, according to the company. The company will use the proceeds to build seven solar power plants, a cogeneration power plant, electrodialysis reversal (EDR) wastewater treatment equipment and resource recycling furnaces, according to company president Chao Lin-yu.

For the solar power project, the company will build a total of six rooftop PV systems and one ground-based PV plant with combined capacity of 22,000 KW, which will be able to generate electricity of up to 30 million kWh a year and help reduce carbon emissions by 17,000 tons a year, Chao indicated.

The cogeneration power plant will use natural gas as fuel and will generate up to 90% of the electricity the company needs once completed, making it self-sufficient in power supply.

“The EDR wastewater treatment equipment is designed to retrieve up to 3,000 tons of industrial wastewater a day, reaching a recovery rate of 50%,” Chao added.

The resource recycling furnaces are to be used for sewage sludge treatment, aiming to reduce the total amount of the sewage sludge produced by the company, while generating heat supporting manufacturing processes.

“All of the green projects are to be completed by 2020, helping Taiwan reduce carbon emissions by 180,000 tons a year,” Chao stated.
