CIMB Group Holdings Bhd announced its official membership to the United Nations’ (UN) Environment Programme Finance Initiative Principles for Responsible Banking (UNEP-FI), making it the only banking group in Asean to be a founding member, together with 26 other leading banks from five continents and 19 countries. The core UNEP-FI group, made up of 27 member banks, helps to redefine the global banking industry’s role and responsibilities.
The UNEP-FI group’s goal to make banking more sustainable. It will do this via national and regional frameworks by requiring signatory banks to set goals for and report on their contribution to national and international social, environmental and economic targets to ensure accountability and transparency on banks’ impacts. Tengku Datuk Seri Zafrul Aziz, Group CEO commented:
“CIMB is fully committed to achieve UNEP-FI’s objectives to help transform global banking practices to ensure the industry creates a positive impact not just economically, but also socially and environmentally.
As a member, CIMB will engage civil society organisations, banking associations, regulators and UN bodies with the Nov 26 launch of the draft principles being planned at the UNEP FI Global Roundtable 2018 in Paris.
Members of the core group are Access Bank (Nigeria), Arab African International Bank (Egypt), Banco Pichincha (Ecuador), Banorte (Mexico), Barclays (United Kingdom), BBVA (Spain), BNP Paribas (France), Bradesco (Brazil), CIMB Group (Malaysia), Commercial International Bank (Egypt), First Rand (South Africa), Garanti Bank (Turkey), Golomt Bank (Mongolia), Hana Financial Group (South Korea), Industrial and Commercial Bank of China (China), ING (Netherlands), KCB Group (Kenya), Land Bank (South Africa), Nordea (Sweden), Piraeus Bank (Greece), Santander (Spain), Shinhan Financial Group (South Korea), Societe Generale (France), Standard Bank (South Africa), Triodos Bank (Netherlands), Westpac Group (Australia), YES Bank (India).
